Guys,
As I am sure by now you have heard, or read about the untimely death of referee Scott Boyle during the Navy/Georgetown game this past Saturday. I know most of you on this list knew Scotty, as he probably officiated in at least a couple of games you have played in over the years. Scotty was a constant presence during the Gilman Summer League and was one of the best officials in the game. As many have already said, Scotty truly knew when to let players play and let the guys in the uniforms decide the game, not the guys wearing the stripes. One of the best things about Scotty was not only his officiating, but the way he carried himself. Scotty was never afraid to come over and drink cold beers with us on a hot summer night after a Gilman game and hang out until we all left. I was fortunate enough not only to play in games he officiated, but coach as well, and though maybe we didn’t always see eye to eye during the game, he had the respect enough to come over to you after it was over and explain why he did what he did. The reason I am writing this e-mail is that I believe it would show a great deal of respect for not only Scott Boyle, but the game of lacrosse itself if you could take the time out of your day on Tuesday and attending the planned viewings. The name of the funeral home is listed in the obituary placed on Hereford’s website. I know I myself will be attending along with others from our team. If you cannot take the time tomorrow, please keep him and his family and your thoughts and consider making a donation in his name to U.S. Lacrosse. Thank you and I look forward to seeing everyone on the field this weekend.
