Baltimore Indoor Lacrosse League 2005 Playoffs Preview

There is a week left in the regular season of the Baltimore Indoor Lacrosse League and the playoff picture is heating up in both the Red and Blue divisions.

Friday, 4 November 2005 will kick off the Red Division playoffs with opening round match ups pitting 3rd place Gin Mill against 4th place Claddagh Pub at 8PM. Claddagh Pub underwent a midseason name change as the bar stepped up to sponsorship for the indoor season and the DR LAXX team took on the new name for the remainder of the indoor season. This game should be a close one as the teams played two tight games during the season with Gin Mill winning both by a total margin of 5 goals.

In September, Gin Mill defeated Claddagh Pub (then DR LAXX) by a score of 10-6. The big scorers for Gin Mill in that game were the Philadelphia boys including Joe Stainer (4G 2A), Joe Sheehan (3G), Greg Golding (2G 1A) and Brain Stewart and Ryan Santo Domingo each pitched in with assists. Neal Goldman also contributed with 2G and 1A. On the other side of the table were the Claddagh leading scorers: Jeff Ulman (3G) and Joe Hughes and Tim Polinsky each with a goal and an assist. Clay Ulman finished off the goal scoring with one of his own. Frank Menschner (8 saves on 12 shots) and Rich Butler (9 saves on 11 shots) split time in the goal for the winning side while Tim Flannigan (20 saves on 30 shots) was in the cage for Claddagh.

Last weeks rematch between these two teams was a tight contest with Claddagh Pub jumping out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period. Gin Mill did not roll over and was up by three at the end of the second period before Claddagh was able to battle back and tie up the game in the third. This one ended in a shoot-out, unfortunately, details were not available at the time of publication but Gin Mill prevailed by 1.

On the season Gin Mill is scoring 10.22 points per game while Claddagh has been putting up 9.0 points per game. In the goal scoring department Gin Mill has averaged 6.78 goals per game through 9 games while Claddagh has managed 6.44 goals per game. The difference in this contest could come down to which team gets better performance from their goal tenders.

The 6PM game on Friday, 4 November, pits #5 Baltimore Fire against #6 from the Blue Division, DC Open. These two teams get to test each other out as they have a regular season match up tomorrow evening, 1 November, at 7PM. Check back later in the week for an update on that game and a preview for Friday night.

But perhaps the main event Friday evening, 4 November, is the battle for first place in the Red Division between the Pickled Parrot and the Crease Monkeys taking place at 7PM. A week and a half ago these two teams met for the first time in the 2005 season with the Crease Monkeys taking the win in Overtime. That game was a classic back and forth battle with neither team maintaining a lead for very long. In the end, Crease Monkeys was able to score on an extra man play in overtime to win the game.

The Pickled Parrot is leading the Red Division in points and goals per game at 15.13 and 10.25 respectively. Crease Monkeys is close behind with 12.13 ppg and 8.75 gpg. Look for a heated contest when these two teams meet again this Friday to determine first place in the Red Division.
