Box Lacrosse Equipment
- I've been asked over the past few months about box lacrosse equipment (masks, rib pads, sticks, etc.) and where to obtain it. Here are several links and some info.
- Stores - The two that I have used are Mountain Edge Lacrosse, based in Calgary, Alberta, and Midwest Lacrosse based in Dublin, Ohio. Mountain Edge has a limited selection on their website but if you give them a call you can order almost any kind of box equipment from them. They also offer pinched versions of several popular field sticks and the ever popular box lacrosse specific STX Powerplay, which is manufactured to narrower specifications than the field game allows. I ordered both my masks from Mountain Edge (see below).
Midwest Lacrosse is where my Warrior Box Rib Pads came from.
- Masks - There are really two kinds of masks which provide much better vision than any of the masks that come standard from the major helmet manufacturers (maybe with the exception of the new Brine helmet). The first is the NLL Style (O'Neill Mask) which is the mask I wear on my box helmet and on my Cascade. The majority of the NLL players also choose this mask. It can be purchased from several different websites including Mountain Edge Lacrosse, Maximum Lacrosse, Proboss among others. Keep in mind prices are Canadian. Some modification of your helmet may be necessary to attach this mask but it is not difficult, let me know if you have questions. I've seen it on just about every type of helmet.
The second style of box mask is the Calcoat face mask, also known as the cat eye mask. This is the mask that Tom Marachek of the Philadelphia Wings wears. I have never tried a helmet on that had this mask attached so I have no feedback but I have seen it on everything from a Cascade and a Gait Field helmet to the typical hockey helmets by Nike, Bauer, Cooper and CCM.
- Rib Pads - Essential equipment in box lacrosse as cross checks are legal. The Maximum Lacrosse player's combo unit is a bit expensive but very nice, hand-made equipment that provides shoulder pads, rib pads and bicep guards in one compact unit.
- Arm Pads - there are bicep guards which are meant to add protection on top of an arm pad and there are also box specific arm pads.
- Goalie Pads - Check out the Goalie Store and several of the websites mentioned above, including Maximum Lacrosse and Mountain Edge (scroll to bottom of main page).
